When your client fits no Express Entry category

Since 2023, IRCC has run most Express Entry rounds by category — healthcare, STEM, trades, transport, agriculture, French. General all-program rounds still happen, but the CRS cut-off in them has drifted well above what a mid-career applicant with one year of foreign experience and a good-not-perfect language score can reach.

Read the client's real position

Pull three numbers before you advise anything: the client's current CRS, the last general-round cut-off, and the last cut-off in any category they could plausibly enter. If the gap to the general cut-off is more than about 60 points and there is no category fit, an Express Entry-first strategy is a slow bet, not a plan.

Where the points actually are

For most clients the movable points are provincial nomination (600), a second official language (up to ~24 combined), a Canadian credential, and Canadian work experience. A PNP nomination is the single biggest lever and often the honest recommendation — but it changes the province, the timeline and sometimes the NOC that matters, so it is a redirect, not an add-on.

• French is worth modelling even at a modest level. NCLC 7 across all four abilities plus CLB 5 English adds around 25–50 points and opens the French category.
• A provincial stream may value the client's occupation differently than the federal categories do. Check the specific province's in-demand list against the client's NOC and settlement ties.
• A Canadian study or work period resets the analysis, but only counsel it where the client can actually fund and pass a study permit or land an LMIA-exempt permit.

What to tell the client

Be concrete about the horizon. "You are in the pool" is not reassurance if the pool has not selected their profile in a year. Give them the category cut-offs, the nomination option with its trade-offs, and a review date. If the realistic route is a province or a temporary-to-permanent path, say so at the first consult rather than after twelve months of no invitations.
