Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa

Overview

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa is a points-based pathway for skilled workers. To be eligible, you must secure 6 points based on your professional qualifications, occupational registration, or income level. You must also have a job or job offer from an accredited employer in New Zealand.

Who qualifies

Applicants must be 55 years old or younger and meet health and character requirements. You must demonstrate English language proficiency and score at least 6 points. Points are awarded for one of three skill categories: New Zealand occupational registration, a Bachelor's degree or higher, or earning 1.5 times the median wage. You can also claim additional points for skilled work experience in New Zealand.

   Step 2: Submit Expression of Interest (EOI)

   Submit an EOI to Immigration New Zealand to have your points assessed.

   Step 3: Receive Invitation to Apply (ITA)

   If your EOI is successful, you will be invited to apply for the resident visa.

   Step 4: Submit Resident Visa Application

   Submit your full application and pay the required fees within 4 months of receiving your ITA.
