UK High Potential Individual Visa: Which Universities Qualify You in 2026
If you graduated from a university in the top 50 of any of three major global rankings, the HPI visa lets you work in the UK for two years with no job offer and no sponsor. UK universities do not count.
The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is a quiet but powerful route: if you graduated from an eligible overseas university, you can come to the UK to work, look for work, or be self-employed for two years — with no job offer and no sponsor required. For a PhD, it is three years.
How eligibility is decided
Eligibility comes down to one list: the Home Office's Global Universities List.
A university is on the list for a given year if it appeared in the top 50 of any one of these three rankings in the relevant period:
- QS World University Rankings
- Times Higher Education World University Rankings
- Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU / "Shanghai")
Because it is "top 50 of any one," the combined list covers universities from over 20 countries — including many in the US, Canada, Australia, China, Singapore, and across Europe.
Two rules that catch people out:

- The list is dated to your application, not your graduation. Each annual list applies to qualifications awarded in a specific window (for example, 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026), and your eligibility is judged against the list in force when you apply. A university can be added or dropped year to year.

Other requirements
- You must have been awarded your qualification in the last 5 years (bachelor's, master's, or PhD level — it must be verified by Ecctis as equivalent to the UK level).
- English at B1 (lower than the Skilled Worker route).
- £1,270 in maintenance funds, held for 28 days, if you have been in the UK less than 12 months.
- You can only use the HPI visa once — it cannot be extended, but you can switch into other routes (Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Innovator Founder) from inside the UK.
Why it is worth checking
If you graduated from a strong university abroad in the last five years, the HPI visa gives you two years in the UK to find a sponsored role or build something — without needing an employer to commit before you arrive.
