Proof of Funds for a Visa: How to Build a File Portals Actually Accept
Officers refuse applications when they cannot follow where the money came from or confirm you can spend it. A clear, well-ordered proof-of-funds file fixes that — and no, a "fake statement" is not a plan.

"Proof of funds" is one of the most common reasons a visa is refused, and it is almost never because the applicant did not have the money. It is because the file did not let the officer follow where the money came from and confirm it is available to spend.
This guide covers what actually goes in a proof-of-funds file for Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand — and how to present it.
What officers are checking
Three questions, every time:
- Is there enough? — measured against the published requirement for your visa (living costs + tuition for students; settlement funds for skilled routes; trip costs for visitors).
- Is it genuinely available? — liquid, in an account you control, held over time rather than deposited days ago.
- Where did it come from? — a traceable, lawful source.
If any of those is unclear, that is a genuine-intent or credibility problem — and no amount of "having the money" fixes a file the officer cannot follow.
What to include
Core evidence:
- Bank statements, official and stamped, covering the last 3–6 months. Show the balance held over time.
- Fixed / term deposits with proof you can access them.
- Investment or mutual-fund statements, if you are relying on them.
If someone is funding you:
- A signed sponsor letter stating who they are, their relationship to you, exactly what they are covering, and for how long.
- The sponsor's own bank statements and photo ID.
- Proof of the relationship (birth certificate, family register).
Source of funds — the part people skip:
- For any large recent deposit, prove where it came from: a property sale deed, a gift deed, business income and tax records, sale of investments, an inheritance document. One page that explains a big number is worth more than ten pages of statements without it.

For students, also:
- The tuition payment receipt from your institution.
- An education loan sanction letter (stronger if partly disbursed).
- A scholarship award letter.
How to order the file
Officers review fast. A folder of unlabelled PDFs and phone photos works against you. Build one document, in this order:
- A one-page summary: total available, currency, whose money it is, source in one line each.
- Bank statements, newest first.
- Deposits and investments.
- Sponsor letter + sponsor's bank evidence + ID.
- Source-of-funds documents.
- Tuition receipt (students).
Then check the size limit. IRCC, UKVI, ImmiAccount and Immigration New Zealand portals commonly cap uploads at 2–4 MB, and a stack of camera scans blows past that instantly.
Our Document Creator is built for this: add your statements and letters to labelled sections, and it produces one portal-ready PDF with a cover page and contents, compressed to fit. You can scan pages from your phone, and when it is done you can run it through Document Review to catch name and date mismatches before you file.
About "fake proof of funds"
A lot of people search for ways to show funds they do not have. Do not. Fabricated bank statements are one of the fastest routes to a refusal for misrepresentation, which typically carries a multi-year ban from the country — and often flows through to other countries that share information. If you do not currently meet the requirement, the honest options are: a genuine sponsor, a real education loan, more time to save, or a cheaper destination — see our cost of studying comparison.
Frequently asked questions
How many months of bank statements do I need for a visa?+
Typically 3–6 months. The goal is to show the balance was held over time, not deposited right before you applied.
Can I use my parents' bank account as proof of funds?+
Yes, with a signed sponsorship letter, their statements, their ID, and proof of your relationship. Unexplained money in a relative's account is weak evidence.
What is "source of funds" and why does it matter?+
It is the traceable origin of your money. Officers need to see that large sums are lawful — from a property sale, gift, business, or investments — not unexplained transfers.
What file size should my proof-of-funds PDF be?+
Aim to stay under the portal's cap, commonly 2–4 MB. Compress camera scans; a tool that grayscales and downsamples images usually gets a multi-page statement bundle well under the limit.
Will a large recent deposit get my application refused?+
Not by itself — but an **unexplained** large deposit will raise questions. Include a document that shows where it came from. --- *ImmigraPath is not a law firm and this is not legal advice.
